The flat-looking early years are normal - compounding does most of its work at the end. Every year you start earlier removes roughly a year (or more) from the far end.

How this is calculated

We compound your current balance and yearly additions at your chosen real (after-inflation) return until it reaches your freedom number - your target income divided by the withdrawal rate. A 4% drawdown is the classic “25× rule”; 3–3.5% is the cautious end for longer retirements.

  • Everything is in today's dollars, so the results stay meaningful regardless of inflation.
  • The income presets are the ASFA Retirement Standard budgets (2025) for retirees who own their home.
  • Not modelled: tax inside/outside super, the age pension (which kicks in from 67 and can significantly reduce the pot you actually need), sequencing risk and super access rules (generally 60).
