Pay calculator / HECS repayment calculator

HECS-HELP repayment calculator (2026-27).

What your study loan actually takes out of each pay, on the marginal system that started on 1 July 2025 - and, for anyone looking back, what the old percentage-of-everything scale would have taken in the years before it.

Your 2026-27 study loan repayment

$3,071

That's $118.11 a fortnight, or $59.05 a week, taken out of your pay before you see it.

Without the loan

$70,680

Marginal, since 1 July 2025

You only repay on income ABOVE $69,528 - 15c in the dollar to $129,717, then 17c above that, and a flat 10% of the whole lot once you pass $186,050. Earning one dollar more can never cost you more than a dollar.

Estimates for an Australian resident, based on the published study and training support loan thresholds for each year. Repayment income is taxable income plus reportable super contributions, reportable fringe benefits and net investment losses - this uses your income plus any sacrifice you enter, and leaves out the other two. Indexation on the outstanding balance is separate and is not modelled here. General information only, not tax advice.

Common questions

What is the HECS repayment threshold for 2026-27?

$69,528. Below that you repay nothing compulsorily. Above it you repay 15c in each dollar between $69,528 and $129,717, then 17c in each dollar above $129,717, and once your repayment income passes $186,050 the repayment becomes a flat 10% of the whole amount.

How did HECS repayments change on 1 July 2025?

They changed shape, not just rate. Until 2024-25 a repayment was a percentage of your entire income - at $54,435 you paid 1% of everything, and each band lifted the rate on every dollar you earned, so crossing a boundary by a dollar could cost hundreds. From 2025-26 repayments are marginal, like income tax: you only repay on the income above the threshold. Earning one more dollar can no longer leave you worse off.

Does salary sacrificing reduce my HECS repayment?

No, and this is the most common mistake. Repayment income is your taxable income plus reportable super contributions, reportable fringe benefits and net investment losses. Salary sacrifice lowers your taxable income but gets added straight back for the study loan calculation, so your income tax falls and your repayment does not move.

Is the repayment taken out of my pay automatically?

Only if you have told your employer you have a loan. They then withhold extra from each pay, which is held against your final assessment rather than paid to your loan through the year. If you have not told them, nothing is withheld and the whole repayment falls due when you lodge - which is where people get caught.

Does indexation still apply?

Yes, on the balance you still owe, but it is calculated on the lower of CPI or the Wage Price Index rather than CPI alone - a change legislated in 2024 and backdated to June 2023. This calculator works out the compulsory repayment; it does not model indexation on the remaining balance.
