What this job actually is.
LINK Books has kept small-business books since 2012. We are a Xero Platinum Partner, registered BAS agents, and we were named Xero's QLD Bookkeeping Partner of the Year in 2016. Every client is on a fixed monthly fee rather than an hourly bill, which shapes the job more than any of those badges do: what gets measured here is files that are right and on time.
The model is one dedicated bookkeeper per client. The same person keeps the file every month, the owner has their direct line, and calls and emails are never charged for. As a senior you hold a portfolio of those clients outright: coding and reconciliations, payroll with STP, super and award interpretation, BAS and IAS lodged under our own agent registration, and a month-end that is closed and then explained to the person who owns the business. You are not working through a queue somebody else assembled, and your clients do not get handed to whoever is free.
The work runs wider than compliance. New clients arrive on MYOB, QuickBooks, Reckon or a spreadsheet and need a clean Xero conversion. Clients months behind need the backlog cleared and a process that stops it rebuilding. Owners who want to drive their own file book a training session with you. Payroll runs from an owner paying themselves through to award-heavy multi-entity payrolls on SCHADS. LINK Books is run day to day by Emma Pollard, Partner and Managing Director, who built most of the processes you would work in. LINK Advisors' chartered accountants are in the same office, so when a client question turns into a tax or structuring question you walk it down the hall and stay in the loop, rather than telling the client to go and ask their accountant.
Day to day, and what we need.
What you'll do
- Own a portfolio of small-business clients as their named bookkeeper and first point of contact
- Run the monthly rhythm: bank feeds and coding, reconciliations, and a month-end closed on time with a summary the owner can actually read
- Process payroll end to end, including STP, superannuation, award interpretation, terminations and year-end finalisation
- Prepare and lodge BAS and IAS, checking the coding behind the GST figure rather than pressing lodge
- Lead Xero setups and conversions from MYOB, QuickBooks, Reckon or spreadsheets, and reconcile the first month with the client watching
- Clear catch-up and rescue jobs, and rebuild the process so the backlog does not come back
- Train clients on their own file, one on one or with their team, in the office or over Zoom
- Support and check the work of less experienced bookkeepers
- Spot when a client needs an accountant, a broker or an adviser, and make the introduction to the LINK team down the hall
What we need
- Experience in a bookkeeping practice or accounting firm, running client files rather than one in-house ledger
- Strong Xero, including Xero Payroll, and comfortable picking up the apps around it
- Payroll across STP, superannuation and award interpretation
- Confident as a client's main point of contact, and able to explain their numbers in plain English
Nice to have
- Registered BAS agent, or eligible and keen to register
- Xero conversion or migration experience
- Dext or Hubdoc, and the payroll and rostering tools around them
- Award-heavy payroll: NDIS and SCHADS, hospitality, or trades
- Experience training clients on their own file

What does a senior bookkeeper earn at LINK Books?
This role is advertised at $75,000 to $95,000 plus superannuation, depending on experience and the portfolio you take on, and confirmed at offer. We publish the band rather than asking you to guess it or find out at the third interview.
What are the hours, and can I work from home?
The team works from the Fortitude Valley office, which runs Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5:00. Hours are flexible around that, there are regular work-from-home days, and Fridays finish early.
Who runs LINK Books?
Emma Pollard, Partner and Managing Director, runs the firm day to day and built most of the processes you would be working in. LINK Books was founded by James Webb in 2012 and is part of LINK alongside LINK Advisors, the chartered accounting firm in the same office.
How many clients would I look after?
A portfolio sized so you can genuinely know each business rather than just process it. The exact number depends on complexity: a few larger payroll clients count for more than a set of simple files.
What software do you use?
Xero throughout, including Xero Payroll, with receipt capture through Dext or Hubdoc and tools like Tanda and A2X around it depending on the client. Clients arrive on MYOB, QuickBooks, Reckon and spreadsheets, so conversion experience helps, and we run Xero training for clients as a service of its own.
Do I need to be a registered BAS agent?
No. LINK Books lodges under its own registration, BAS agent 26865001, so it is desirable rather than essential. If you are eligible and want to register, tell us at interview and we will talk through what support looks like.
I am in-house rather than in a firm. Should I apply?
If you have run the books and payroll for more than one entity, yes. What matters here is the habit of carrying several files at once and talking to the people who own them, which firm experience usually builds and in-house experience sometimes does.
